Special Needs Reading

Reading Comprehension

  • Mediate those cognitive functions which enable early comprehension: problem recognition, relevant information selection, spontaneous comparative behavior, spatial and temporal relations, and conservation of constancies
  • Help Special Needs students make connections among facts, concepts, and events
  • Use simple graphic organizers to sharpen student perception of relationships (webs, chain of events, story maps, etc.)
  • Cultivate students’ question-asking skills
  • Develop strategies and tactics for differentiated instruction which are mindful of appropriateness for Special Needs students
  • Design guided reading and lessons that motivate intrinsic love of reading
