Big Ideas of Arithmetic

  • Enrich understanding of the “big ideas,” i.e., core arithmetic concepts that trouble students most
    • Extend such concepts as number sets, natural vs. unnatural numbers, parity preservation, zero, rational vs. irrational numbers, operational logic, and algorithms
  • Strengthen cognitive functions that currently block mastery of math concepts
    • Special emphasis on how to help students “stop and think” to control impulsivity
    • Enable students to become more precise and accurate with spatial and temporal relationships
    • Promote mastery of accurate symbol and number representation
  • Discover innovative, cognitive - based opportunities to engage students in solving number operations, identifying and comparing geometric concepts, using appropriate arithmetic vocabulary, and defining problems accurately
  • Design lessons which incorporate research - sound strategies to teaching and adapting core concepts based on your district’s curriculum and national standards for students with Special Needs
  • Develop process to check student performance quickly and implement targeted lesson plans before annual standardized tests
