Improved Scores on Michigan’s Standardized Math Tests

Confronted by a situation where 6th, 7th and 8th grade math students struggled to pass the state mandated tests (MEAP), Holly Area Schools sought iRi’s assistance. iRi's Program Development team, Holly Area School administrators and Oakland Intermediate School District Special Education Department collaboratively created a customized professional development program which incorporated Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) STANDARD program into the plan to address students’ math scores. Instead of having double periods of math to push content mastery, the teachers provided 1 period of math and 1 period of FIE. The intention – by enhancing students’ critical thinking skills their math achievement would accelerate, as well.

This approach replicates the successful model that was used with the Cleveland (Ohio) Public High Schools. The customized plan emphasizes teacher development, on-site and electronic classroom coaching by iRi trainers, peer coaching, leadership development, and an annual program evaluation.

The Year 1 Evaluation Report by the Oakland Intermediate School District encouraged the district to continue and expand the FIE Program to the elementary schools and across the curriculum. iRi continues to work with Holly Area School to develop and execute the early childhood program.
