How do we build analytical readers for post-secondary learning or job instruction?”

“How do we apply critical thinking strategies to enable higher reading among all secondary students?”

“How do we identify and correct those cognitive deficiencies that inhibit students from reading critically?”

“How do we incorporate writing to enable students to explore what they have read?

iRi’s High School Reading professional learning programs are best suited for teachers across content areas where critical reading is required. Teachers will learn to integrate vocabulary and comprehension strategies into daily lessons to enable students to analyze and discuss key concepts in challenging courses.

Word Power

  • Enrich vocabulary among high school students with cognition-strengthening tasks that develop precision, accuracy, correct labeling, making exact relationships, key word selections, and verbal labels
  • Incorporate fluency activities in a balanced reading approach to enhance students’ cognitive-rich vocabulary development for causal, temporal, and spatial relations
  • Utilize mediation techniques that enable students to compare, infer, test hypotheses, predict, and assess word choice
  • Elicit students’ intrinsic motivation to read independently and build their own concept banks in each subject area
  • Design authentic lesson plans which incorporate appropriate cognitive development, learning styles, and best practice literacy approaches to vocabulary acquisition
  • Evaluate expansions of working vocabulary applied across the curriculum
