The Cognitive Map

Feuerstein’s Cognitive Map is an analytical tool used to identify specific areas of student difficulty in understanding a lesson. The ultimate objective is to optimize a student’s ability to think and learn. By determining cognitive causes of student error, educators can provide more targeted feedback and/or adjust their lessons to increase accessibility. Feuerstein defines 7 parameters by which the learning process can be analyzed, categorized, and ordered:

  • Content - subject matter
  • Operations - reasoning abilities and problem-solving skills activated by a lesson
  • Modality - “language” of instruction, e.g., verbal, visual, graphic, numerical, tactile, etc.
  • Phase - input, elaboration, and output as 3 interconnected phases of cognition
  • Level of Complexity - quantity and quality of information provided to produce appropriate response
  • Level of Abstraction - distance between mental act and object in which it operates)
  • Level of Efficiency - pace at which a problem can be solved for a specified level of precision and accuracy
